Award winning veteran actress and producer - Joke Silva was born in Lagos Nigeria. Whilst studying Dramatic Arts at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts in the early 80’s, Joke took part in several BBC Africa service radio dramas and had a stint at the Royal Court Theatre Sloan Square as an actress. She started acting professionally at the University of Lagos Cultural Centre, performed variously at the National Theatre and appeared in television movies, home videos and some of the films that birthed the Nollywood we know today. Joke has featured in many award-winning films like Peter Schwabach’s THE SECRET LAUGHTER OF WOMEN where she starred alongside Colin Firth and Nia Long; Kunle Afolayan’s PHONE SWAP alongside Nse Ikpe Etim and Wole Ojo; Jeta Amata and Scott Cleverdon’s THE AMAZING GRACE alongside Nick Moran and James Hicks; Mahmood Ali Balogun’s TANGO WITH ME alongside Geveneviev Nnaji and Joseph Benjamin; Izu Ojukwu’s WHITE WATERS alongside OC Ukeje and Rita Dominic; to name a few. Her performing ambitions have always leaned towards Theatre, and thus Joke has appeared in over 50 stage plays and has premiered world class plays like Wole Soyinka’s JERO’S METAMORPHORSIS, Ifeoma Fafunwa’s HEAR WORD, and Wole Oguntokun’s “FOR COLOURED GIRLS; Gcina Mhlophe “HAVE YOU SEEN ZANDILE, Sefi Atta’s THE NAMING CEREMONY and Played ‘Taiwo’ in Ahmed Yerima’s THE SISTERS at the Hackney Empire, London. Joke has received several awards, some of which include the Lifetime Achievement Awards at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA 2016), Best Actress at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) and Best Supporting Actress; SOLIDRA Award for Performing Art; Best of Africa Award from Alexander Forbes; and Afro Hollywood Award for contributions to the entertainment industry. Her career in the creative industry has spanned well over 3 decades and she is celebrated as an Icon in the African film industry. She is a member of Bank of Industry committee on approval of Nollywood loans and has been the Principal of Academy on the TV show PROJECT FAME since 2008.
